Zara (Zarifa Mgoyan) was born in Leningrad on 26 July 1983, into a family of the natives of Leninakan (Armenia). Her music career began when she studied at school in the city of Otradnoe. Aged twelve, the singer recorded her first compositions “Just Today”, “The Heart of Juliet”, that got into rotation on radio.
Zara graduated from gymnasium with a silver medal, a children music school with honors, specializing in piano, and the Saint Petersburg Academy of Arts.
In 1997, Zara reached the finals of the “Morning Star” TV Contest (Moscow, Russia) and won the Grand Prix of the International Festival “Let the Children Laugh” (Cairo and Port Said, Egypt).
The singer is a winner of the All-Russian festivals “Hopes of Siberia” (Omsk, Russia), “Hit of the Year” (Saint-Petersburg, Russia), “Hopes of Europe” (Sochi, Russia).
In 2009, she was a finalist of the “Two Stars” project, where her duet with actor Dmitry Pevtsov won second place.
Since 2009, she has received several Golden Gramophone Awards, since 2013 she’s been a prizewinner of the Russian TV festival “Song of the Year”.
In December 2016, Zara was designated a UNESCO Artist for Peace. The ceremony took place in the UN Headquaters in Paris (France).
In 2016, Zara’s solo concert dedicated to the 20th anniversary of her artistic career was held with success at the State Kremlin Palace in Moscow.
In June 2017, Zara and Andrea Bocelli received a special “The Best International Duet” award from MUZ-TV Music Awards. The singer was invited by Bocelli to perform in the concert "Il canto della terra" on the stage of Teatro del Silenzio in Toskana and Colosseum (Italy).
Zara performed a duet with Mireille Mathieu at her solo concert in the State Kremlin Palace and the UN Headquaters.
She is a member of the supervisory board of the “Step Forward” Charity Foundation (St. Petersburg). Zara also takes part in charity projects by the “Call of the Heart” Foundation helping visually impaired children, co-established with Diana Gurtskaya.
In April 2017, the singer arranged an exhibition of the works by the festival prizewinners "We Are Together" in the UNESCO headquarters.
